alternator swap ext. reg. to internal regulator 240-260 '81

Hi:

Have '81 245 that needs alternator swap.........seems it has been causing vibration due to perhaps bad bearings.

I seem to have understood in the past that if original alternator has external voltage regulator, a new alternator with internal regulator (part of brush assembly) may be directly substituted by just unplugging old cable and tying it back out of the way.

Am I remembering this correctly???
