I had my mechanic change the pinon oil seal in my 92 245, which had been leaking less than a week. He told me that the bearing was "leaking like a seive", and that in the past the nut must have been over-torqued, or not pre-torqued properly. He also stated that he was using 210 ft-lbs to tighten it.
Afterward, I realized that about a month ago a Volvo dealer had gone over (and under) the car, and their mechanic did not see any leak at that time. I also check the specs for torquing the pinon oil seal - they call for a maximum of 184 ft-lbs.
I believe my mechanic over-torqued the seal himself. The question is, will this damage anything other than the seal (a $30 part)? Is it possible even to over-tighten the nut? Will extensive/expensive repair be needed? Or will just replacing the seal and properly tightening it suffice?
Thanks
