You might have a problem with the governor or its seals in the tailshaft housing. The governor pressure should build with road speed more or less linearly and after the fourth shift (OD shift) it should be easy to get downshift at 42-50 mph and progressively higher throttle application as road speed, and thus governor pressure, builds. What happens at higher speeds like 65 mph? Do the shifts through the other gears perform correctly at high throttle openings?
