Removing trim, how to eliminate goo? 200

I've taken notice that my 245, unlike many 200 series volvos, has gray extra trim pieces. These pieces are on the edges of the doors, presumably to prevent ding damage in the event that I were to attack a car by throwing my doors open. Also amongst the gray trims are pieces lining the edge of my wheel arches. I've been looking at pics of cars online and think they look much better without the trim.

Question is, how do I get the trim off, and the goo off without screwing up the paint? Has anyone done this before? Thanks for the help.
