auto trans no OD 200 1993

I have a 1993 240 auto which will not go into OD. I know this has been addressed here before. The car has 183k on it but has been babied its entire life. The trans has had a recent complete fluid flush. A new solenoid was installed to no avail. The relay checks out as well as the kickdown cable. The problem was intermittent at first and now stays stuck in 3rd. The trans is spotless inside and shifts smoothly through 1,2 and 3.The Volvo repair shop says the torque converter is bad and I need a new trans-Doesnt make sense to me. It seems as if something is plugged or sticking internally. Any help would be appreciated before I invest in a new tranny.
