240DL Overdrive Switching Problem 200 1988

I have read Steve LeFever, Henry T. Mui, Norm Lizotte, Jime Rearick, Mr. Tool, and Dick Grinell responses to the overdrive switching problem and you all have helped me.

Thanks!

However, here is a new one. The car will not go into overdrive. The orange arrow light on the stays on all the time but when the switch on the shifter is pressed it will change the color of the arrow from light orange to dark orange. I proceeded to check the Overdrive Relay and the solenoid. When listening to the relay as I pushed the switch on the shifter it would click which proved to be working. The dealer cost for a new solenoid is $238.00 which forced me to figure out how I was going fix the solenoid without paying out the big bucks. So I read the Haynes manual and everyones messages and determined that the solenoid was frozen and would not respond to the 12volts sent from the relay. So I removed the solenoid from the transmission and drilled a .25" hole in the middle of it where the existing hole is in the middle and whaala! I now have overdrive back. That is without the function of the switch on the shifter working.

Thanks to all for your postings!
