Thanks to all who responded to my inquiry about intermitent flashing dashboard lights. The culprit turned out to be the wiring harness under the crankshaft. The small wire from the alternator and the wire to the dash from the oil pressure switch were bare and touching each other (I assume). Re wrapping them staved off buying a new harness for the time being and solved the problem.
