Re: automatic transmission failure 140-160 74

The transmissions will fail from a number of reasons. Failure of a seal or sealing ring, sticking valve, low pump pressure, clogged filter, loose valve body, cracking case, overheat, etc. Did they fail in the same clutch pack? Probably yes, if the transmissions didn’t last the long between rebuilds.

With almost all failures…what happens is that the pressure applied the clutch pack is not great enough to prevent slipping. These clutch packs contain something like 4 fiber plates and 3 steel stacked upon one another. That are compressed with a piston under hydraulic pressure when applied. The fiber plates have a steel core and fiber on both sides. The plate is about the thickness of 10 sheets of paper. It doesn’t take much to wear fiber material off by slipping. And when it’s off….it’s the end. That’s where the burning comes from.

Don’t rebuild that transmission or use the parts with your new one. Get a used one from a junkyard and rebuild it if necessary. I have seen other people with similar problems of having the transmission fail after a rebuild. More than likely, it’s a crack in the case or a problem with valve body. Both can be hard to find and rarely do the rebuilders look for the failure! They just replace all the seals and most of the clutch packs like assemble line workers. (Didn’t mean to offend any body here)

Been in the same position. Amoco $800 rebuild. 5000 miles it lasted. 300 miles when I owned the car. The idiots didn’t clean up the valve body. They thought I was as bright as them and wanted another $800 dollars to try it again!. I was a broke student at the time so I autopsied a $50 tranny a figured how they worked. Did it myself and did it right!

Go talk to the tranny shop in a nice way and to the owner of the business, not just the front desk guys. Remind them that they were paid to diagnose and repair the tranny not just to rebuild it! So suggest it something like misrepresentation or fraud!!!! If worse come to worse suggest to them that you maybe will go to the media, TV or paper. Some times they realize that they are making a mistake by not helping you out of the bad spot they put you in.

Good Luck,

Have a good holiday every one!

Steve
