Caution: Rough Idle may be fatal to Timing Belt! 700 1990

Just heard a bit of surprising news from my mechanic. My 740GLE had a rough idle that was persistent. Could not clean the idle control or flame trap enough to control it.

So, before I took off on a 4 hour trip, I asked him to take a look....

The cause of the rough idle was a stripped counter-balancing belt. Apparently, because I had an oil leak on the valve cover and another leak on one of the timing belt seals, the counter-balance belt got oil soaked and the teeth wore off of one side. It was down to the metal core.

Once the counter-balance belt goes, it can (and apparently commonly does) take the timing belt with it. Since my engine is the DOHC, this will cause a impending contact with the piston and the valves and a $1000+ head job.

Moral of the story....take that rough idle seriously!
