Valve adjustment 700 1990

On the B230F engine, valve adjustment is recommended every 30k miles. Last time I had it done was about 40k ago on car with 132k miles. Didn't make much difference. Does adjustment need to be done this frequently? Is it usually off spec. much? Thanks
