This has been going on a while, so here is my current situation. Any help is appreciated.
The history...
I broke the timing belt on my 1984 240DL wagon. After pushing the car home, and before realizing that I lost the belt, I replaced the starter (like a dummy, thinking that the starter was bad). After realizing the timing belt was gone, I took to the job of replacing the belt. I am confident that the camshaft and crankshaft gears are correctly lined up and think the intermediate crank is pretty darn close. Anyway, when it came time to give it a try and see if it would turn over (before I put all the accessory belts, fan, etc. back) the car wouldnt start. The engine cranked good, sounded fine, but no start. I have spark to the plugs, but further investigation showed no fuel. I tested the pumps and the both run fine (when I jumper the connector under the glove box), so I moved on to the relays. When I crank the engine, neither the fuel pump relay or the system relay (identical little metal box relays under the glove box) trip. When I tested the relays (following the troubleshooting section of my manual) both of them operate fine. I checked fuses 5 and 12 (the pump fuses) and they seem OK. (the weird thing is that when I check the fuse holder terminals with the fuse removed for fuse #12 (main pump), I get full resistance, is that normal?) The 25A blade fuse in the engine compartment seems to be fine.
So if you can shed any light on this problem I would really appreciate it. Specifically:
Do you know if having the timing off would cause the fuel and system relays to sit idle when the engine is cranked?
Could something be wrong with the distributor itself that could cause these symptoms?
When I crank the engine, the system relay and the fuel pump relay should both click, right? Do you know any components or specific trouble spots between the ignition switch and the relays?
I would imagine that the timing of the engine would be somewhat removed from the fuel relay function, but if you know different, let me know.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give!
