Rear Light Wires 200 86

My 86 240 Station Wagon has a problem with the wires feeding back thru the tailgate to power the "center" brake light, license plate light, and rear wiper.

The wires obviously frayed to the point of breaking at the exposed part under the hinge of the rear hatch. A mechanic I do trust indicated a 3 to 4 hour job. Does anyone have any suggestions so I may tackle this one myself? Would appreciate any advice on how to proceed.
