Lambda sond light and steering ??s

OK, here are two bonehead questions that I'm sure you guys will be able to handle in about 5 seconds.

1) How do I turn off the lambda sond indicator light. Just replaced the O2 sensor, and the manual says there is a cover over the back of the odometer which I need to remove then push the button it is covering. Does this mean I have to take the entire lower half of the dash apart, or kill myself trying to reach up there blind?

2) The rubber boots covering the small ball joint(?) were the tie rods exit the steering gear box are torn. What is the ramification of just letting them go, or doing the old duck tape and baling wire trick? If I do decide to replace the boots, can I assume getting the tie rods off the hubs is strait forward or should I prepare myself for battle?

Thanks.

Keith
