dead starter 700 1990

I wrote a couple of days ago that on rare occasion my starter ould not function for anywhere from 5 seconds to 15 minutes (not even a click). Well, tonight we're going on to 4 hours. I've tried to look at the batt cable ends, the main neg ground anchor.

The one difference I've noticed this time is that the vent will only blow through the defrost vents, is that a clue or a coincidence?

Tomorrow I plan to do a little trouble shooting and pull the starter. How servicable are the starter and solenoid?

Thanks in advance for any tips or hints.
