740 buying advice 700

I've read some scary things about the ZF automatic transmission so I will be avoiding that when I buy a 740. Is there anything else or any particular year or feature that I should avoid? Would I be better off getting a manual. I'm hoping to get as good mileage as I can so I was thinking also that a manual with overdrive might be better?
