A.C. cycling on and off 900 1995

I just purchased a 1995 960. When I run the A.C. on auto in most cases when I accelerate (even mildly) the A.C. fan cuts way back, then picks up as I lift my foot off the throttle. Occasionally it works fine. It seems to be more prevalent around town. Also. my check engine light keeps coming on. My Volvo mechanic says the ignition switch is acting bizarre, turning things on or off at the wrong time. He wants to start by replacing the switch then go from there. Does this sound reasonable? I have owned eight 240's and have done most of the work myself. I love Volvos, PLEASE tell me I haven't made a mistake going with the 960. It really is a great car to drive and I particularly like the 95 bodystyle. Any comments out there?
