I've been reading the posts regarding the conversion from the piston compressor to the rotary compressor. So let me throw everyone under the bus and let's go down this path once more...
This would be a great time to make a change. I've got a buncha stuff off my engine right now, as a part of the cam-belt-shroud-melting-exhaust-gasket-failure project. I also know that my (piston) compressor has lived it's life, it's ready to go to freon heaven.
I've been to the slavage yards in the area the past few days, checking out what is going to be necessary to change over. It looks like the rotary compressor requires the use of a different power steering pump; one that has the reservoir mounted (remotely) on the LH inner fender. Ok, that's no big deal... except my car is a 1982 turbo, and it has some sort of distributor module located where the remote PS reservoir is on the cars at the yards.
The local Pick-N-Pull sells PS pumps for about $22, and compressors for $27 (!) And there is an '85 245 sitting there, with the whole deal ready for the picking... nice dry compressor. So:
I guess the bottom line is: Is it worth it? Does the rotary compressor really pump out more cool air??
