overdrive 700 1990

hello. i have a 1990 volvo 740 turbo that stays in overdrive constantly. it has been like this for about 4 months. i was wondering if this is bad for it. it used to come on and go off randomly, but now it just stays on. what should i do? my car is an automatic, if that matters.
