What is that thing? 700 1990

1990 740 wagon automatic transmission B230F engine 187k miles.

Yesterday I replaced my in-tank fuel pump. There is a contraption installed just downstream of the in-tank fuel pump (in the tank) that appears to be a straight pass-thru that the fuel line plugs into. It slightly resembles a regulator but I couldn't tell what its function is. It is not mentioned in my Chilton's repair manual. What is it?
