temp guage 700 1989

I have a "89" 740gl w/ 250,000 miles on it and the temperature guage is not reading any longer. Does anyone know what temperture plug sends the reading to the guage on the dash . Is it the one into the engine block or the one in the radiator? Also home much do they cost?
