I just bought two 86 740 GLEs, one wagon, one sedan, both running. The wagon looked good, the sedan ran great. So, I pulled the motor and the ZF tranny out of the sedan and put it in the wagon. Voila! It runs like the old motor from the wagon did. I took the entire air intake system, fuel pump and filter, ECU, exhaust, shifter, engine wiring harness, and so on from the sedan to the wagon, and still no joy. The throttle body is clean, the plugs and wires new, all Bosch and Volvo parts. The symptom is, althought the car starts and idles like a champ, in gear, you have to let it idle forward and gently rest your foot on the accelerator, until the RPM cross around 1200, when you can just crack the throttle open to get it rolling. It's best to shift manually through the gears, because it can die on the upshift. If you mat it at any time it dies. Just giving it "normal" gas in a corner is enought to kill it. But it starts right back up and idles cheerfully until the next time I try to accelerate. Any ideas?
