bitch of an odometer but no stripper 200 1988

After some stop'n'go action, it has stopped. I took it apart, expecting the oft-mentioned stripped gears and crumbled cogwheels, but found nothing of the sort. Everything is whole, the little electric motor sort of thing connects well with the gears, and when taken out the latter turn just fine. Electric contact seems OK at the instrument-panel end, and the speedo works.

How should I test, and what tends to go wrong with these later-year odometers? And, BTW, how does the speedo needle come off to allow full access to the odometer?

Thanks for suggestions.

George Antony
