rear main seal: take out housing?

I am wondering which way people do the rear main seal: do you take out the housing and then remove the seal on your workbench or do you pull the seal out with the rear flange (seal housing) attatched to the car?

if you take out the housing, do you use a new gasket or just rely on gasket maker?
