Went out, took off all four wheels, and gravity bled the brakes (thanks for that suggestion, is easy). Opened all of the bleeders as I went around taking the wheels off, and then after topping the master cylinder a couple of times went back around and closed them off.
Started car. BF light flickered and went out, only to come back when I hit the pedal. Left alone the light would go out again. But hit the pedal and it would come on.
And the pedal felt a bit soft. So I went around with a hose and pan and pedal-bled each one in Bentley order. Not having a helper or a one-way valve I did three pumps with the hose in the fluid to fill the tube, then stuck a peice of two-by between the seat and the pedal to hold it down while I tightened the bleeder. Then loosened it very slightly and hit the pedal again a couple of times, then used the board to hold the pedal.
Pedal felt great, but light didn't even flicker, was on full time...&^)
So I took the switch out of the BF housing and gravity bled in Bentley order, then hit the pedal a few times, then reinstalled the switch.
Same result, light on full, no flicker. So for now I have the wire off the switch in the BF housing, but I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas about this. Pedal feels great, car stops perfectly. Quickly, too.
My local Volvo mechanic says that the switches fail pretty regularly, but what gets me is that it was going out on it's own once in a while, which sounds to me like it isn't locked-up. I have one bleeder that's still broken off (got to get one of those reverse bits Zee mentioned), but it's one of the middle ones on the front, and both of those bleed the same circuit.
It would be nice to have the BF light operating again, but short of replacing the switch I can't see how. Anybody ever fix one of these switches?
