Insrument Panel disassembly - George Downs? 140-160 1968

I'm in the process of trying to clean up the gas guage (never shows full).Got the panel out but I'm stuck on how to get the back off without destroying the rheostat. I've started to bend the metal tabs that hold the ceramic unit onto the panel back but chickened out -remembering something in the Haynes manual about necessary destruction of rheostat if you go back there.

How did you do it?

Any hints on reassembly?
