Engine speed sensor 700 90

A recent "check engine" light sent me to the dealer for diagnostics on my '90 740 turbo. I was advised the car had a "faulting engine speed sensor". As best I can tell (the dealer would NOT)the engine speed sensor is the pickup sensor on top of the bell housing, just below the distributor. I have an intermittent, very mild miss at idle in the engine, which I can feel sitting at the wheel and see on the tach. The car has clean injectors and is very well maintained to have over 200k on it. Did I find the sensor, is it best to replace it, and should I expect other/worse symptoms from a "faulty engine speed sensor"?
