battery mystery 200 90

My 240DL stranded me yesterday on the interstate. It slowly just lost power and coasted to a stop, luckily at a rest area. My mechanic (a good one) went through everything and then found that the battery read 12 volts but dived to 2 volts when attempting to start. So he charged it up and drove it home and drove it back to his shop this morning. Everything fine. He pronounced it a "seperated plates" (or something like that)in the battery. However the battery is only a year old from AutoZone, a Duralast or something like that.

Has something like this ever happened to anyone else?
