I bought this 78 242 several years ago. The fuel tank would be empty hen the guage still read more than 1/4 tank. This was frustrating to say the least.
I finally pulled the in-tank sender unit - the float arm was travelling its full arc, but the resistor "contact arm", that slides along the coil, was polished and the contact area was spread out so as to give a "mushy" reading.
I cleaned some residue off of the coil wire (being careful not to break the wire) and then physycally bent the thin contact arm so that there was a smaller contact surface touching the coil wire. It slides very easy without snagging the wire coil.
Now the guage reads just into the orange reserve area when the float arm is all the way down. This is a huge improvement. I have yet to run the tank dry to check it insitu. (A jerry can of fuel in the trunk.)
Questions:
Has anyone had similar problems?
How did you remedy it?
Is there a replacement "contact arm" for the sender unit?
