Strut tube spacer accesability? 200 '84

The struts (that the PO installed ) on my '84 260 diesel are clunking and I was wondering if it was possible to install some spacers by just loosening the top strut retaining nut, then removing the lower balljoint housing and popping them in from the bottom and retightening the nut, , or do I have to remove the strut from the top and drop them down ?

( OK so my old spring compressor is bent and I'm too tight to pitch for a new one if I REALLY don't need it )
