What is this? 900 1991

Hi guys,

I was just checking the engine compartment and at the back of the left headlight (nearby the wires) a sizable black container (canister) with two nozzle on it. Apparently one hose is running along the chasis to the back of the engine and the other hose is running to the upper part of the left fender and is attached to a some round gadget with the sensor wires and the hose from here goes to the lower part of the intake manifold.

I never knew this thing was there all the while. So curiousity got into me. Can somebody let me in on what is this and whether this part needs any maintenance (mind you my car is a decade old).
