Temperature Gauge 200 1986

Just purchased this car and have many questions here is one. My tempertaure gauge on the dash works sporadically....When it does work maybe 3 out of 8 starts it reads fine and doesn't show hot, so I think the temp s OK, but why would the gauge only work sometimes? Is this an easy fix or will it be expensive? thanks....
