My 78 heater box looks different than the 87 heater box... 200 78 & 87

What year did Volvo change the heater box and controls.

My '78 has cable controls and the heater box looks like the older style shown in the Haynes Manual. (Heater core almost flat - 30 degrees +- of tilt)

All my other Volvos, from '80 on up, have had the twin fan, near vertical heater core, vacuum control type heater box.

I have a complete heater box from an '86 and an '80.

If I have to replace the heater core in the '78, is it possible to replace the later style heater box?
