What Causes Those Often-Mentioned Engine Hiccups? ALL 85

Hell0 All,

I have noticed that lots of posts that mention "hiccups" from the engine. My engine has what I think to be the same malady. It sounds like this: "mmmmmm pop-pop-pop mmmmmm pop-pop-poppopop mmmmmmm". It almost feels like a miss, and the engine shakes the car a bit. I can even hear the buzz of the frequency valve change when this occurs. Sound familiar??

Anyone know what things cause this convulsive behavior? (I wish a good scare would rid my car of these hiccups....hey, maybe a paper bag.)
