740 M47(?) manual trans. fluid change 700 1988

Hi, new to the board. I have a '88 740 with the 5-sp. standard transmission. (Overdrive is 5th gear rather than the button on the shifter knob) Anyway, I need to change the trans fluid and I'd like to use synthetic. A friend used synthetic oil and his engine block started to leak like crazy. Does anyone have any experience with using synthetic lube in a manual trans? Did it leak? Thanks and sorry for the long message.
