water leak from fresh air vent to heater blower 700 1986

If I run water from the garden hose into the fresh air vent, I find a trickle exiting at the opening created by removing the heater blower (which was ruined by water). No wet carpet, etc. How/where is the water supposed to be diverted from the air entering the system?
