Coolant blow-out 200 88

Hi,

I was driving on the freeway today when I heard a "thunk" on the right side of the car and looked back to see a cloud of white (I hope it was steam and coolant rather than smoke). We got off, and there was coolant sprayed all over the right hand side of the engine, and a little hole with a gasket still attached at the top of the right hand side of the radiator was still issueing steam. We had vacuum hoses replaced three days ago, and my questions are: What was filling that little round hole? How can I tell if there is coolant left in the radiator, and if there is, can I drive it to the garage (about 6 miles)? What was the likely cause of this, and does it portend future trouble? Obviously I'm a neophyte, but the Haynes manual is pretty vague about this. Thank you so much for any help/advice you can give!
