Relays 900 1993

While troubleshooting my wifes 93 940 Turbo Wagon idle problem, I found a couple of relays behind the ashtray on the left side of the fuse block.

I believe one of them is the fuel pump relay, but I didn't know which.

I removed them one-at-a-time, first the right one, then the left one.

(Shut-off car while removing and re-installing)

I thought when I found the fuel pump relay I would know since the car shouldn't run without a fuel pump.

To my suprise, the eng will run with both relays removed as long as I hold the rpms to around 2000.

I re-installed both relays, and the idle problem went away.

(bad connection at relay connections?)

Car seems to be running perfect with the exception of the large amount of black smoke out the tail pipe at WOT/high-rpms.

At abt 3/4 throttle, smoke is barely noticeable.

At abt 1/2 throttle and below, no smoke.

Questions:

What do these relays do?

Are there multiple elec fuel pumps on this car?

Is the smoke thing normal at WOT?

Thx for all the good help,

John
