Radio Static AM only 700 1987

The reception is great on FM and Tape plays great. Switch to AM and there is this constant drone of static. If you have a really strong signal no static. But get out in the boonies or 20 miles out of town and it starts.

If you turn off the engine the reception is great. Also it is NOT RPM related. It is constant through out the RPM range. Any idea's where to start looking for the cause.
