960 Timing Belt DIY? 900 93

Has anyone attempted to replace the timing belt on a 960? Mine is due in another 5k miles and I would like to try it myself but I don't have the "special tool" the service manual calls for to measure the belt tension. Has anyone come up with an alternative method for checking the belt tightness? I've also heard that you should replace the belt tensioner at around 80K miles. Does anyone else have any experience with this?? Thanks.
