Straight headers, no mufflers! '71 142S 140-160 1971

Some of you may have seen my post about needing an entirely new exhaust

system for my 1971 Volvo 142S. Has anyone tried ditching mufflers and just running a pipe straight back from the headers?

Would it be too loud, or not work because of not enough backpressure, etc..
