Advice on buying 740 700 1987

Hello! My husband and I are looking at a 1987 Volvo 740 and are hoping for some advice on pricing. We drove the car the other day and found that it drives quite well. It has 77,000 miles (formerly owned by the previous owner's grandparents) and runs smooth except for what seems to be a soft suspension. No other major noises or concerns though. The exterior is pretty ugly...in need of a new paint job, but no rust. The interior is pretty shot...headliner bubbles, cracked plastic, power windows failing, rips in seats,... and the list goes on. None of these cosmetic problems are concerning to us, we just want a car that runs well and will continue to do so. So, do you think this is a good car or is it too old? They are asking $3,000 (stated as firm)...too much? Any potential mechanical problems in the near future that are typical of 740s of this age? Please let us know and thank you very much for your time!!!! Johanna
