Heat anyone? 200 1980

I ahve a problem that i hope that you guys can help me with. i ahve a 1980 volvo 240 dl, and it has a problem. when ever i drive it the heat guage goes almost to the top. now i would think that this was the thermostat but we just replaced it, and maybe friction from the timming belt, but we just replaced it. anyone know, could this just be something with a temp reader in the engine somewhere?

oh and i ahve to turn my heat on so that it does not get into the red (the guage). and damn its not winter yet and i hate being so hot...
