View Diagnostics Codes 200 1984

How does one view the diagnostic codes on a 1984 244? I saw the previous post regarding where to find the conversion table, but not how to read them. I'm very new at Volvo's (my 17 year old daughter's)... my old Camaro's didn't have 'em.
