Performance fall off after boost gauge goes about 1/4 into the red zone 700 1885

This is my first volvo, I like the car alot, it also happens to be my frst experience with a turbo. If I keep the boost gauge in the yellow zone. no problem, smooth as silk acceleration. If I punch it, put the boost gauge in the red zone, my 740 coughs, sputters, and generally just acts cranky. Let off the throttle and depress the accelerater smooth and easy the old 740 doesn't miss a stroke. No black smoke out of the tail pipe, smooth idle, easy start up. Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Frank
