Phantom 2500-rpm Rev Limiter? 200 88

OK. I was driving along today ('88 240DL Sedan, Auto, recently cured starting problem by 'Fosterizing' the fuel pump relay; worked great; Thanks, Don), and without warning, the car lost power. Wouldn't go above 30 mph no matter how hard I pushed the gas. Engine sounded normal, no smoke or anything, and when I released the gas, it settled into a normal, smooth idle.

Stopped the car, and experimented. In Park, the car would run and rev normally until about 2500 rpm. Then I could feel a 'kick' and the revs would drop slightly, refusing to go any higher. Still, normal idle.

When I turned the car off, and restarted it, the whole problem was gone. Revs back to normal; accelerates like it always did.

What the heck? At first I suspected something to do with fuel pressure. Now I suspect it's something electrical (possibly involving fuel pressure), since the problem came and went. I'm wondering when it will return, though, and I'd love to know what to check.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.
