Coolent tank cap crack=blown radiator? 900 1994

Just looking for an explanation for why a bad thing happened to a good Volvo.

Twelve months after installing an aluminum/plastic volvo radiator, I had to replace it after finding transmission fluid in the coolent tank. Then, I noticed that the coolent tank cap had huge cracks in it. So is it possible that the lack of pressure in the coolent side of the radiator caused an unequal pressure situation that allowed the transmission side to burst the wall bewteen the two?
