pulsing vibration at highway speed? 200 1987

Took a trip in my '87 245 last weekend. At 70MPH and above I feel a vibration that feels like tires out of balance, except instead of being constant it pulses with a period of around one second. It shakes/stops shaking, shakes/stops shaking, etc. Didn't notice that it changed when turning left/right vs. straight ahead. It _may_ get better when going uphill but that could be my imagination, it definitely doesn't completely go away on uphill stretches. Again, I could be making that up so don't think that's a for sure clue.

The car is totally original with 159K miles. I'm about to replace the clutch and can take a look at the driveshaft stuff at that time, other things that come to mind are the front suspension pieces. All that stuff is original, it's on my list after the clutch.

Is this something to be worried about? Other than being annoying is it like a classic symptom of something or other about to break and my front wheels are going to fly off?

Thx,

Terry Haywood
