Greetings again, all. The BW35 automatic on my 1975 164e has an odd problem.
If you fill the transmission to the "full" line on the dipstick, the car tends to hesitate on takeoff and when turning sharp corners, as it seems to lose transmission fluid from the pickup.
If you add an extra half-quart, it performs perfectly. I did this for a while, but now there's a problem: when I overfill it in this way, it starts to gradually "burp" the extra fluid out, I guess through the vent opening in the dipstick tube (??). I'm not sure. Problem is, it then gets onto the exhaust and smokes like the devil.
Has anyone else encountered this problem?
Thanks,
Steve
