'80s Volvo 240 vs. '80s Camaro/Firebird 200 1989

Almost every '80s 240 series I have seen may look a little tired, but over 95% of them are still going strong. Why is it that the 3rd-generation Camaros/Firebirds don't last as long and are never very dependable? Someone I know once had an '82 Camaro (bought new) with a 4-cyl. and it died at only 45k miles. Was GM doing something then that Volvo never did?
