Replace Heater Control Valve? 900 1993

I'm wondering what everyone thinks about this.....I have the dash apart somewhat on my '93 940....side console panels off, radio out, glovebox out, and was wondering whether or not I should replace the heater control valve. I've read that these tend to fail, by cracking and then leaking, b/c they are made out of plastic. My wife will be driving this car and I don't want to worry about catastrophic coolant loss, and the prospect of getting antifreeze in my newly cleaned interior. So...how hard a job is it to replace the heater control valve? Would it be worthwhile? How common are failures of this mechanism? Is mine definitely plastic, and if so...does anyone sell a metal replacement or some sort of improved version that won't break?.....thanks a bunch for your opinions.
